DIY Shea Butter Recipes

Make sure that all appliances and utensils are clean before creating DIY products. If not completely sanitized, products can grow bacteria or mold. Be sure to thoroughly clean everything with hot water and soap, then wipe down with rubbing alcohol or vinegar and let dry.

Skincare

  1. Sunscreen

This sunscreen protects skin from sun exposure. The ingredients used in this recipe have natural SPFs that provide protection from UV rays. It helps to lock in moisture and hydrate the skin.

Ingredients:

½ Cup Coconut Oil

¼ Cup Avocado Oil

¼ Cup Beeswax

4 Tbsp Zinc Oxide

3 Tbsp Shea Butter

1 Tbsp Mango Butter

2 Tbsp Red Raspberry Oil

1 Tsp Pomegranate Oil

½ Tsp Vitamin E Oil

Instructions:

Combine all ingredients into a stainless steel or glass mixing bowl. Using the double boiler method, boil Shea butter, beeswax and coconut oil over low heat until formula becomes liquid. Stir consistently. Add in all other ingredients. Use oven mitts to pick up bowl and pour liquid mix into clean, empty jars. Let sit until hardened.

 

  1. Mint Chocolate Whipped Body Butter

This body butter moisturizes and hydrates the skin without leaving a greasy residue. It helps to alleviate sore muscles and cool down the skin.

Ingredients:

¾ Cup Shea Butter

½ Cup Coconut Oil

¼ Cup Cocoa Butter

2 Tbsp Vitamin E Oil

1 Tbsp Rosehip Oil

1 Tsp Arrowroot Powder

30 Drops Peppermint Essential Oil

Instructions:

Combine ingredients (except arrowroot powder) into a saucepan over very low heat. Use a metal spoon to stir until everything is melted. Once mixture is melted, pour it into a glass or stainless steel mixing bow. Let sit in the fridge for 10-20 minutes. Once the mix has become solid, but not completely hard, it’s time to whip. Using a hand mixer, beat on medium speed for around 5-10 minutes and add in arrowroot powder. It should look light and fluffy, resembling whipped cream. Transfer into clean, empty jars for storage. This is temperature sensitive and will melt in high heat. If this happens, place in fridge and rewhip.

 

  1. Lip Balm

This lip balm hydrates and moisturizes lips. It absorbs quickly and works to heal dry, chapped lips.

Ingredients:

½ Cup Shea Butter

½ Cup Beeswax

½ Cup Coconut Oil

¼ Cup Apricot Oil

¼ Cup Sweet Almond Oil

4 Tbsp Vitamin E Oil

5-10 Drops Grapefruit Essential Oil

Instructions:

Combine all ingredients (except essential oil) into a glass bowl. Using the double boiler method, boil over low heat. Stir consistently until mixture has melted completely. Once it has all melted, remove from heat and add in grapefruit essential oil. Pour mixture into small jars and let sit until solid. Do not overfill.

 

  1. Eczema & Psoriasis Salve

This salve helps to calm and soothe itchy, inflamed skin caused by eczema and psoriasis. It works to hydrate and seal moisture into affected areas of the skin.

Ingredients:

3 Tbsp Shea Butter

3 Tbsp Hemp Oil

2 Tbsp Beeswax

1 Tsp Neem Oil

1 Tsp Tamanu Oil

1 Tsp Vitamin E Oil

½ Tsp Rosehip Oil

5-10 Drops of each essential oil: Frankincense, Eucalyptus, Cedarwood and Tea Tree

Instructions:

Using the double boiler method, melt the beeswax and Shea butter over low heat. Once melted, add in the Hemp oil, neem oil, tanamu oil, vitamin e oil, rosehip oil and essential oils. Stir until fully incorporated, then remove from heat. Pour mixture into clean, empty jars for storage and let sit until it solidifies.

 

  1. After-Sun Lotion

This lotion works to rehydrate and repair damaged skin caused by the sun. It treats sunburns by cooling and healing inflamed skin.

Ingredients:

1 Cup Aloe Vera Gel

½ Cup Coconut Oil

1 Tbsp Shea Butter

1 Tbsp Beeswax

1 Tbsp Vitamin E Oil

5-10 drops of each essential oil: Lavender and Peppermint

Instructions:

Combine ingredients (except aloe vera and essential oils) into a double boiler. Once the mixture has melted, pour it into a glass bowl and allow it to cool. Once the mixture has cooled and is slightly hardened, use a hand mixer to loosen the contents. Slowly add in the aloe vera gel, stopping occasionally to allow the contents to combine. Whip the mixture until a light, fluffy texture forms. Once the aloe vera is completely combined, add the essential oils and continue to mix. Transfer the lotion into clean, empty jars for storage.

 

  1. Lemon Poppyseed Whipped Sugar Scrub

This whipped sugar scrub gently exfoliates and removes dead skin. It promotes soft, hydrated skin and leaves skin looking clean, bright and glowing.

Ingredients:

1 Cup Cane Sugar

½ Cup Coconut Oil

¼ Cup Shea Butter

1 Tbsp Almond Oil

½ Tbsp Vitamin E Oil

½ Tbsp Poppy Seeds

1 Tsp Arrowroot Powder

20 Drops Lemon Essential Oil

Instructions:

Measure ingredients (except for essential oil) and add them into glass bowl. Using a hand mixer, beat on medium speed for a few minutes. You’ll notice the scrub is starting to whip up. Place the mixture into the freezer for about 10 minutes. After 10 minutes, whip the mixture again for about 2 more minutes. Once the scrub is thoroughly whipped, add in lemon essential oil and mix one last time to combine, then transfer it to a clean, dry jar for use.

 

  1. Soothing Face Mask

This face mask is ideal for sensitive skin. It’s deeply nourishing and soothes inflammation. It works to refine and soften skin while balancing skin tones.

Ingredients:

2 Tbsp Shea Butter

1 Tbsp Coconut Oil

1 Tbsp Aloe Vera Gel

1 Tsp Honey

Instructions:

Melt Shea butter in a double boiler on low heat. Mix in the coconut oil, aloe vera gel and honey, stirring consistently. Allow mixture to cool in the fridge for 10-15 minutes before placing into clean, empty jars.

 

  1. Purifying Deodorant

This deodorant purifies and detoxifies armpits. It helps to mask the smell of body odor and fights bacteria by sealing in moisture. It’s safe for all skin types as it soothes irritation and inflammation.

Ingredients:

½ Cup Coconut Oil

½ Cup Beeswax

¼ Cup Shea Butter

¼ Cup Arrowroot Powder

¼ Cup Cornstarch

15 Drops Tea Tree Essential Oil

15 Drops Lavender Essential Oil

Instructions:

Place the coconut oil, beeswax, and Shea butter in a double boiler and stir until fully melted. Add in essential oils and continue to stir. In a separate bowl, mix the cornstarch and arrowroot powder. Add the oil mixture to the dry ingredients and whisk together. Pour into deodorant canisters and allow to harden.

 

  1. Green Tea Eye Cream

This eye cream perks up tired eyes and is ideal for mature skin. It reduces wrinkles by stimulating the production of collagen and preventing the loss of moisture. It works to combat puffiness and increase firmness around the eyes. It hydrates the skin which helps to clear up dark circles and bags.

Ingredients:

2 Tbsp Rosehip Oil

1 Tbsp Shea Butter

1 Tsp Beeswax

1 Tsp Vitamin E Oil

5 Drops Geranium Essential Oil

1 Green Tea Bag

Instructions:

Melt Shea butter, vitamin E oil, rosehip oil and beeswax in a double boiler. Once all oils are melted, pour an open green tea bag into the melted oils. Allow the tea to steep for about 20 minutes over low heat. After 20 minutes, pour the oil mix through a strainer to remove the green tea bits. Mix in the geranium essential oil. Pour into a clean jar, and let it become solid.

 

  1. Calming Bath Bombs

This recipe for bath bombs calms the mind and body with ingredients that deeply nourish, protect and heal the skin.

Ingredients:

1 Cup Baking Soda

½ Cup Citric Acid

½ Cup Epsom Salt

¼ Cup Arrowroot Powder

2 Tbsp Shea Butter

1 Tsp Jojoba Oil

1 Tsp Water

30 Drops Patchouli Essential Oil

Instructions:

Combine and whisk all dry ingredients. Melt Shea butter over low heat until it becomes liquid. Add in the jojoba oil and patchouli essential oil. Slowly pour the liquid mixture into the dry ingredients. Wearing gloves, use hands to combine the liquid and dry mixtures together. Spray with a little water while mixing until it clumps well. Pack a small amount of the mixture into a mold. Fill both pieces of the mold so they push together firmly. Tap the molds with the back of a spoon to loosen the bath bomb from the mold and slowly remove it. Let it sit and air dry for 24 hours before storing away or using in bath.

This face cream is perfect for mature skin as it helps to reduce the signs of aging. It works to rejuvenate the skin, remove dark spots and tighten skin.

Ingredients:

¾ Cup Shea Butter

4 Tbsp Rosehip Oil

2 Tbsp Avocado Oil

½ Tsp Vitamin E Oil

15 Drops Frankincense Essential Oil

5 Drops Ylang Ylang Essential Oil

Instructions:

Begin by melting the Shea butter using the double boiler method. When the butter has fully melted, add in the rosehip oil and avocado oil and mix well. Let the mixture cool until it’s room temperature. It should be thick and creamy, but don’t let it become solid. Now, add the essential oils and vitamin e oil in the bowl and whip for about 5-10 minutes, until it becomes fluffy. Transfer mixture to clean, empty jars for storage. Store in a dark and dry area.

 

  1. Moisturizing Bath Melts

These bath melts provide intense hydration for dry skin. They help to moisturize and soften skin while reducing inflammation.

Ingredients:

½ Cup Shea Butter

1 Tbsp Sweet Almond Oil

1 Tbsp Avocado Oil

30 Drops Lavender Essential Oil

20 Drop Sandalwood Essential Oil

Instructions:

Using the double boil method, melt Shea butter on low heat until fully liquid. Remove from heat and set aside to cool down. In a stainless steel or glass bowl, combine apricot oil, sweet almond oil, jojoba oil and vegetable glycerin. Stir well and pour into melted Shea butter. Continue mixing and add in sandalwood essential oil. To reduce bubbles, pour mixture into a bottle using a funnel. Pour the liquid castile soap into the bottle as well. Place the pump dispenser on the bottle and swirl to blend together.

¾ Cup Shea Butter

2 Tbsp Argan Oil

2 Tsp Tamanu Oil

5 Drops Geranium Essential Oil

5 Drops Vetiver Essential Oil

Instructions:

Using the double boiler method, melt the Shea butter over low heat. Let it melt completely and set it aside. After about 5 minutes, mix in the rosehip oil, argan oil, tamanu oil and vegetable glycerin. Stir it up well and then add in the essential oils. Use a hand mixer to begin whisking the mixture until it reaches a light and fluffy consistency. Transfer to a clean, empty jar and keep in a cool dark place away from sunlight.

Ingredients:

½ Cup Shea Butter

3 Tbsp Coconut Oil

Using the double boiler method, melt the Shea butter and beeswax over low heat. Let it melt completely and then mix in the coconut oil, sweet almond oil and vitamin e oil. Stir it up and add in the essential oils. Put the mixture into the fridge for about 10-20 minutes or until it cools off and hardens half way. After 10-20 minutes, use a hand mixer and start beating until the mixture becomes a light and fluffy consistency. Transfer into a clean, empty jar and store in a cool, dry are away from sunlight.
