Is Chamomile More Than Just Tea?

If you’re one of the thousands of people in the world who drink tea, you’re probably familiar chamomile. Known for its calming and soothing properties, we often drink chamomile before bed. But did you know that chamomile has been used since ancient times for more than just tasteful tea?

What Is Chamomile?

Believe it or not, there’s more than one variation of chamomile essential oil. The two most popular versions are Roman chamomile essential oil (Chamaemelum nobile) and German chamomile essential oil (Matricaria chamomilla). Don’t mix these two up. While both oils are extracted from daisy-like flowers, they’re very different. They differ in appearance, chemical composition and therapeutic benefits. The Latin word nobile, meaning noble is used in Roman chamomile’s scientific name because it’s therapeutic properties are believed to be more powerful than German chamomile. That’s why our favourite chamomile oil is Roman! So today, let’s talk about Roman chamomile. The word chamomile comes from the Ancient Greek word Chamomaela, meaning ground apple. This refers to chamomile’s sweet, fruity scent of apple. Roman chamomile was used by Ancient Egyptians, Romans and Greeks for its medicinal properties. The Egyptians valued chamomile so much that they dedicated the chamomile plant to the Sun God, Ra. The writings of famous Greek physicians Hippocrates, Dioscorides and Galen prove that Roman chamomile was used in ancient times for its therapeutics properties.
